Hardly a day goes by without someone talking about Artificial Intelligence (AI). Depending on who you ask, it’s either the greatest business breakthrough in decades… or the beginning of the robot apocalypse.
My view? AI is here to stay. And while it’s not magic, it is becoming a very practical business tool.
I’ll admit it—I’m not a tech guy. But I realize that businesses who ignore AI risk falling behind competitors who learn how to use it effectively.
Ironically, the biggest challenge with AI isn’t technology. It’s communication.
Recently, I wanted AI to help analyze data. My breakthrough came when I realized AI only performs as well as the instructions it receives. Vague requests produce vague answers.
That’s where many people get frustrated.
AI works best when you give it context, priorities, and guardrails. Ask it to analyze trends, rewrite an email, organize messy data, or compare solution options. Tell it the tone you want. Specify the format you need. Explain what should not change.
Think of AI less like magic and more like a very fast assistant who still requires leadership and direction.
And just like employees, AI can make mistakes. Blindly trusting every answer is a good way to look foolish.
Companies getting the most value from AI are not replacing human judgment—they’re enhancing it. For small business owners, that is the real opportunity: not chasing hype, but learning how to use AI practically to create an advantage.
Good luck navigating your AI journey.
