Getting Distracted or Charting a Clear Path?

by James Canada

Many business owners ask: How do we eliminate distractions and chart a clear path? One valuable tool is to create critical success factors. They are the key components that enable us to evaluate growth in an objective way instead of relying on that subjective feeling of being successful.

In working with many organizations, I discovered that there are a few consistent themes: customers, employees, branding/marketing/sales, finance and value to shareholder/accountability. Here is an example:

• Market penetration. Obtain market success as a leader by surpassing our competitors.
• Customer satisfaction. Establish ourselves as valued business partners by providing high-quality services.
• Employee satisfaction. Attract and retain highly competent, qualified and resilient employees through professional development programs.
• Financial success. Attract and retain valued clients and employees with our ability to be successful financially.

Remember, there is no “right” or “wrong.” Critical success factors define a clear direction that helps the organization achieve its vision. Once a leadership team determines the objectives, they are further defined with measurable tactics. This is how we can determine — without bias — the progress we are making.

From my personal experience, it is important for all leadership team members to have an equal voice. Avoid having the leader of the company create the plan where he/she controls the outcome. If he/she dictates the factors, the team may not buy into it. There are many brainstorming and decision-making tools available. However, for any group of type A personalities, I recommend bringing in a professional facilitator.

Make it a leadership team effort for all to participate so everyone feels a part of the process. When employees see a clear purpose for the work they do, and how it contributes to the bottom line, the business thrives.
