As we protect ourselves from a virus with social distancing and increased hygiene, it is evident that we are protecting humans. The humans we protect are coworkers, employees, managers, customers, and suppliers. Of course, each individual also has a family. Our families live in communities. Humans are social beings.

As I have studied and supported business cultures over the years, my fascination is stoked by the profound realization that organizational culture has a significant impact on the profitability of the company AND the happiness of the people involved.

As I have reflected, recently, regarding the challenges that are facing us during this pandemic, it reminded me of a guiding principle: “Every person is worthy of love, compassion, and support.” My experience is, when people feel this worthiness, they have a desire to share that feeling with others. Their ability to do that is impacted by the culture. Here are a few questions to ask yourself and your leaders:

-Does our culture make people feel safe?
-Does the culture make those who we serve better?
-Does it give those around them a sense of purpose and worthiness?
-Do our employees have a sense of accomplishment at the end of the day?
-Can they take home their experience from their culture and help others in their community?

Looking forward, based on the enormous impact of your culture, what can you do to enhance your environment and those involved? What needs protecting to have an impact? What do you need to do more? What needs to change? What needs to stop? Keep in mind, the goal is not to just protect people, but to create an environment where everyone feels worthy and can thrive!
