Women Leaders - Karen Maurer, Krilogy
by Marianne Biangardi and Jennifer Bardot
When you began your career did you ever imagine you would have a leadership role like you have now? What advice would you give your younger self?
When I was in an administrative role early in my career, a mentor told me something that changed everything: if I took a leap, I could grow my business in ways I couldn’t even imagine. I chose to believe him—and I jumped. I knew I didn’t want to stay where I was, and change was the only way forward. That leap opened doors I hadn’t even known existed. The opportunity was there—it was up to me to step into it and shape it.”
If I could talk to my younger self, I’d say: Don’t wait until you feel ‘ready.’ Growth happens when you’re brave enough to move before you’re fully confident. Bet on yourself.”
Who inspires you and why? What is your most valued attribute in the leaders you respect or mentors you have had?
Right now, my greatest inspiration is my Business Development Coach, Brian McRae. He’s taught me to take the focus off myself and instead ask, ‘How can I support and elevate the people around me?’ That mindset shift has transformed the way I lead. By focusing on encouraging my team and uplifting other leaders, I’ve found myself surrounded by positive, intelligent, and driven entrepreneurs—each of whom has helped me grow in return.”
The attributes I value most in leaders are selflessness and gratitude. Selflessness allows us to lead without ego, and gratitude keeps us grounded in the bigger picture. Together, they remind us that leadership is less about being in charge and more about creating meaningful impact in the lives of others.
What did it take in order to trust yourself to step into leadership?
For me, stepping into leadership wasn’t a bold, premeditated move—it came out of necessity. I had left a salaried position to start my own financial advising firm, and from that point forward, I had no choice but to dig deep and make it work. I needed to support my children, myself, and my staff. That reality pushed me to grow quickly and trust my instincts.
Along the way, I made a conscious effort to set boundaries that preserved balance in my life. I stayed true to my values and led with integrity, even when it would have been easier not to. Looking back, I believe that commitment to authenticity and ethical decision-making is what ultimately shaped my success as a leader.
Have you experienced any hardships and how did you overcome the obstacles. When did you know, the business was going to make it?
I see obstacles as turning points for growth. One of the most defining moments in my career came when my firm partner retired and our brokerage firm was sold. I had to reassess everything—stay on my own, sell the business and retire, or explore a new structure that could support my clients and allow me to grow.”
That reflection led me to Krilogy, where I found a thoughtful and collaborative environment that aligned with my values. Joining as a Partner and Senior Wealth Advisor has allowed me to partner with a team of other skilled professionals—from investment analysts to tax and legal experts—and together we’re able to deliver truly comprehensive service to the high net worth families we serve. It’s elevated my business in ways I could not have achieved alone.”
Just as importantly, this move created more space in my life to engage with women’s entrepreneurial groups in St. Louis, which is something about which I care deeply. That balance between professional impact and personal purpose is when I truly felt, ‘This is working’.
What do you attribute your success too? Secret to your success…
I’ve always believed in doing the right thing for the right reasons—and trusting that the money will follow. That mindset has guided every decision I’ve made in my career. For me, success isn’t just about numbers; it’s about integrity, long-term relationships, and making a meaningful difference in my clients’ lives. When you stay aligned with your values and focus on service first, the results take care of themselves.”
Additionally, I strongly believe in truth and discipline. While I don’t ‘have a boss,’ I’m deeply accountable—to my clients, to my team, and to myself. I push hard to follow through on every promise and deliver the very best I can. At the end of the day, I want to be proud of the effort I’ve put in—and honestly, I want the people around me to feel proud of me too.
What advice would you give other local women leaders?
Trust your instincts, even when they feel quiet—and speak up, even when it’s uncomfortable. You don’t need to have all the answers to lead well, but you do need to lead with integrity, empathy, and consistency. Surround yourself with people who challenge and support you, and don’t be afraid to ask for help or collaboration. That’s not weakness—it’s wisdom.” n
